Ingredients

  • 2 ounces
  • 1 teaspoon Maraska
  • 1 dash
  • 1 dash
  • 1 dash Peychaud’s
  • Garnish: 1 twist

Method

Stir all the ingredients over ice, then strain into an Old-Fashioned glass over 1 large ice cube. Express the lemon twist over the drink, then place it into the drink.

History

An 1876 update by bartender Harry Johnson to the original "cocktail" of spirit, sugar, water, and bitters — the addition of maraschino and absinthe made it "improved," and the format became a direct ancestor of drinks like the Sazerac.
