Ingredients

  • 2 ounces cold
  • 2 ounces
  • 1 ounce fresh juice
  • ¾ ounce simple syrup
  • Garnish: 1 half wheel and 1 brandied cherry on a skewer

Method

Pour the seltzer into a Collins glass. Short shake the remaining ingredients with ice for about 5 seconds, then strain into the glass. Fill the glass with ice cubes and garnish with the orange half wheel and cherry.

History

Tied to a bizarre 1874 prank fad in which people were told a man named Tom Collins had been badmouthing them at a nearby bar — sending them on wild goose chases that turned the invented name into a punchline, and eventually into the name of a gin-lemon-soda highball already in circulation at the time.
